Vancouver Summer Camps Still Open for 2026: Last Spots Available
Share
Most Vancouver summer camps fill in February. If you are reading this in late spring or early summer with no plan for July or August, you are not alone, and you are not too late. Here is exactly where the open spots are, and how to book before they go.
The short answer
Yes, Vancouver summer camps still have spots open for July and August 2026. Last-minute openings happen for three reasons: a parent cancellation, a sibling enrolment freeing one spot, or a camp adding a late session. Sunhouse Camps currently has limited availability at both Trout Lake (East Vancouver) and Pacific Spirit Park (West Side) for ages 4 to 7. Check current openings →
Why spots open up late in the booking cycle
Vancouver summer camp registration officially opens between January and February for most programs. Within six to eight weeks, the majority of spots are claimed. So how is anything open in late spring or summer?
1. Late cancellations and transfers
Family travel plans change. A child gets injured. Work schedules shift. Many programs (including Sunhouse Camps) allow transfers up to 14 days before a session, which means spots reopen as late as two weeks before camp begins.
2. New sessions added
Camps with enough demand sometimes add late sessions in May or June. These open quietly and fill within days. If you are on a camp’s email list, you hear about them first.
3. Holdouts and waitlist progression
Some camps hold a few spots for siblings, returning families, or program operations. Around mid-spring, these get released to the public if not claimed.
The takeaway: last-minute camp booking in Vancouver is possible, and often less stressful than registering in February. You see real availability instead of waitlisted holds.
Where the open spots are at Sunhouse Camps in 2026
Sunhouse Camps runs two summer locations in Vancouver. As of this writing, here is the live picture.
Trout Lake (East Vancouver)
Located in John Hendry Park between East 15th and East 19th Avenue, our Trout Lake camps use grassy fields, sanded shorelines, lakeside meal spots, and surrounding trees as a daily outdoor classroom. Spots remain in both July and August. Browse Trout Lake Camps →
Pacific Spirit Park (West Side)
Located at the main park entrance, 4915 W 16th Avenue, our Pacific Spirit camps explore the ancient forest trails, mossy creek beds, and woodland clearings of one of Vancouver’s most pristine urban wilderness areas. Spots remain in August (July is selling fast). Browse Pacific Spirit Camps →
How to book a last-minute summer camp in Vancouver, fast
Step 1: Know what you actually need
Before you start clicking around, decide on:
- Age range your camp must accept. Many quality camps cap at 7 or 8.
- Geographic preference. Are you East Van, West Side, North Shore, or willing to drive?
- Outdoor or indoor. Outdoor camps fill differently from indoor and rotational programs.
- Single weeks or full weeks. Some camps require multi-week bookings.
- Ratio expectations. 6:1 is excellent. 10:1 is standard. 15:1 means your child is part of a herd.
Step 2: Check actual availability, not marketing pages
Most camp websites have a generic “Book Now” page that does not tell you what is actually open. Look for sites where you can see specific weeks and remaining spot counts. Sunhouse Camps shows live availability per session.
Step 3: Book quickly
A spot that exists at 10 AM may be gone by 6 PM in late spring. If a camp meets your needs and has open availability, register the same day. Hold-then-decide does not work this late in the cycle.
Step 4: Confirm your child is ready
Most outdoor day camps require your child to be:
- Fully potty trained
- Comfortable with nature peeing when needed
- Able to walk independently for extended periods on uneven terrain
- Within the age range stated
- Without major behavioural or medical needs the camp cannot accommodate at ratio
Sunhouse Camps requirements are listed in our Terms and Conditions and our FAQ.
What to avoid when booking last minute
Camps with no transparent ratios
If the website does not tell you the child-to-educator ratio, it is probably high (10:1 or more). For a 4 to 7 year old, you want 6:1.
Camps with vague age ranges
“Ages 4-12” means the 4 year olds will be lost. Look for camps with age ranges narrower than 4 years.
Camps without educator training disclosed
Reputable camps disclose CPR + First Aid certification and pedagogical training. If the site just says “qualified staff” with no specifics, ask before booking.
Camps with no parent communication plan
You should know how often you will hear from the camp during your child’s week. Sunhouse Camps sends a weekly video recap to every family.
What makes Sunhouse Camps different for last-minute bookings
If you are booking late, three things matter most:
1. The ratio holds even at the last minute. Sunhouse Camps does not relax our 6:1 ratio to fit more children when sessions sell well. If your child gets a late spot, they get the same quality of care as a child who booked in February.
2. Every educator is trained by the founder. Nicole Hughes, founder of The Sunhouse Method™, personally trains every educator. There is no “substitute teacher” at Sunhouse. The standard is consistent across every session.
3. Real outdoor experience. Both Sunhouse locations (Trout Lake and Pacific Spirit) are full-immersion outdoor environments, not indoor camps that take occasional walks. For a child entering camp late and possibly anxious, the calm of being outside helps more than any indoor activity could.
FAQ about last-minute Vancouver summer camp booking
How late can I book a Sunhouse Camp?
We accept bookings up to the start date of a session, as long as a spot is available. Most parents book one to four weeks ahead.
Are last-minute spots more expensive?
No. Sunhouse Camps pricing is the same whether you book in February or three days before camp begins. $500 per week, or $1,200 per month.
Can I switch sessions if my plans change?
Transfers to another session are possible if space allows and the request is made at least 14 days before the start date. Full policy in our Terms and Conditions.
What if all the Sunhouse spots fill while I am deciding?
Then you are looking at a different camp, and you should pick fast. Other quality Vancouver options for ages 4-7 include Stanley Park Ecology Society, smaller forest school summer sessions, and certain neighborhood community centre programs. None of them maintain a 6:1 ratio like Sunhouse, but they may have late availability.
What if I am still not sure my child is ready?
The Sunhouse Method™ is designed for capability, not perfection. If you are uncertain, contact us and we will help you decide. Trial bookings are available.
